The Nineteenth Great Race Corryong 2011
For the third consecutive year The Harley versus Indian Great Race was held at Corryong and surrounding areas.
Entrants’ motorcycles are limited to Indian and Harley Davidson’s manufactured before 1958.A record 120 machines faced the starter at 9.00am on Saturday. The route headed to Tallangatta the on to the Dartmouth Dam. The Laurel Hotel at Mitta Mitta provided lunch. Then back to Corryong via Cudgewa. Riders are scored on navigation timing and roadworthiness of their bikes. Older bikes are given a bonus co-efficient.
The Corryong Lions Club were again the major caterers for the event utilizing the Youth Club Hall to provide dinners for 160 people.
Sunday morning saw the event head for Cabramurra. Weather remained perfect. After refueling at Cabramurra everybody was to gather at the Southern Cloud Lookout for the Rolling Race down the Tooma Hill. After lunch at the Tooma Hotel it was back to Corryong via Tntaldra and Cudgewa.
Winners received trophies at the evening’s presentations. For the Indian Team winner was Paul Hanes from New Zealand on a 1929 101 Scout. Second was Matt Willis from Melbourne on a 1938 Chief. Third was first Lady home Kim Kavanagh from Sydney on a 1936 Sport Scout.
For the Harley Team first was Steve Mowat on a 1938 Knucklehead. Steve has the distinction of being one of only three riders to compete in all nineteen Great Races. Second was David Sanderson on a 1955 Hydra-Glide from Melbourne and third was Michael Johnson from Wollongong on a 1923 J model.
The Indian Team were the overall Winners in what was a very successful event.
